Aphrodite of Melos, also known as Venus de Milo, Greek Love Goddess - In 1820, a Greek farmer on the Aegean Island of Melos found the Aphrodite broken into pieces and scattered about in a cavern. Collecting the pieces, he hid them in his barn until the ruling Turkish authorities found her. Working out a covert payoff, the French then obtained and loaded her onto a frigate in the Aegean. The Aphrodite was bound for Paris, and ultimately The Louvre. Aphrodite means Goddess of Fertility and Love - she was created c200 BC and for that time and place, she was a marvel of construction with the introduction of a twisting ‘S’ curve within the female form. |
